Cliffs CD XI reviews
Posted by Cliff Coleclough, November 25 12:10 PM

Am I the only reviewer? Seeing lots of tumbleweed around these parts of late.

01. Frail by Jars of Clay (from Much Afraid) - Relaxing, quite enjoyable - smooth. Had overtones of side 2 of The Runner Ian Thomas album from 1981.

02. Ambiguous Headdress by Tribe of Judah (from Exit Elvis) - Bad singing coupled with screaming combined to make this song unenjoyable.

03. Because by Elliott Smith (from the American Beauty soundtrack) - This song had a Bohemian Rhapsody style to it, add to it a pinch of The Bee Gees. Quite interesting. Quite likeable.

04. Porchlight by Neko Case and Her Boyfriends (from Furnace Room Lullaby) - I really didn't like the singing at the start, but then it got way better, but then the chorus part kicked in again and that was an awful ear piercing sound. Very mixed on this song.

05. Roll Me Over by Peter Stuart (from Propeller) - Plain. Nothing stands out.

06. Conga Fury by Juno Reactor (from Bible of Dreams) - I felt this song was an odd selection with the genre of the album. It didn't fit in with the rest of the song selections. I didn't like it too much.

07. Broken Harpoon by The Jayhawks (from Smile) - I really like this song a lot. The singing style is great.

08. New Frontier by David Vanacore & Russ Landau (from the Survivor soundtrack) - An interesting variety of instruments on this song. Very cool. But it might get annoying soon enough. Survivor had a soundtrack - WTF???

09. Flower by Eels (from Beautiful Freak) - Somewhat boring, but I found it more enjoyable than not.

10. Odessa Yodel by Wylie & The Wild West (from Ridin' the Hi-Line) - Too short. Song would have been better had it been a bit longer.

11. West of Samoa by Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant (from Swingin' On The Strings) - LOVE IT!! Gilligan, Magnum P.I., Hawaii - what a cool song.

13. More Like the Moon by Wilco (from More Like the Moon EP) - Dull, dull, dull. Nothing unique about this song. Entire song felt as if the performers were just going thru the motions.

14. Elegant Transaction by Loose Fur (from Loose Fur) - Nothing. I get nothing from this song.

15. All The Same To Me by Golden Smog (from Weird Tales) - I like it. Sounded very John Lennon style. And even if the song was half as good as the Master - it would be great. But it's even better than half as good. I really liked this song.

16. Poor Places by Wilco (from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot) - Yet another just average song - nothing special with it.

17. Everything Under the Sun by Extreme (from III Sides To Every Story) - wow - what the hell can I say about this epic of a song. A trifle too long? Ummm - not exactly a trifle - maybe more like 15 minutes too long. Ummm - wait - it's Extreme - so more like 18 minutes too long. Holy crap - this song was just waaaaayyyy too freaking long. Did I mention the song was too long? Overall, the song wasn't all that bad. It could have easily been made into three different songs - since it sounded like the song went thru three transitions during it's play. Normally I listen to the CD three times before providing the review - I have to admit I did not listen to this song fully all three times.

I liked this album. I really didn't hate any of the songs too badly. There were quite a few dull songs, but the songs that I liked - I really liked. The album is quite relaxing to listen too. I give it a 7.5/10.
