ABC Finally Nets a Hit Show; 'CSI' Bests 'Law'

It's been a long road for ABC but the practically entertainment-void 8PM Wednesday timeslot proved to be just what the doctor ordered. Last night's series premiere of 'Lost', the hour-long drama by JJ Abrams ('Alias') featuring the exploits of 48 stranded plane passengers on a deserted island after a crash landing, drew a surprising 18 million viewers.

Another ratings winner that may surprise some was the debut of 'CSI: New York' beating the heretofore unstoppable 'Law & Order' by a handy margin. 'CSI: New York' managed 19.4 million viewers while 'Law & Order' settled for 15.6 million.
