Clive’s CD Trade

Slipknot – Duality
Slipknot. Where to begin? Adored by 15 year olds and adults alike, they’ve found a place in music untapped by any band in history, and several “nu-metal” bands have followed suit. I’m assuming this track is off some of their newer stuff, because it doesn’t sound like the Slipknot I used to listen to in high school. Great guitar riffs, crappy vocals. Likeable enough, but I’d never go out and purchase this because I find it completely unoriginal.

Type O Negative – Cinnamon Girl
Never been a big fan. They’re good in their own respect, but goth-rockish/techno-metal has never been my cup of tea. The vocals push it over the edge of a you-should-have-stopped-making-music-years-ago-band for me.

The Jesus and Mary Chain - The Hardest Walk
I dig this song, mostly because it represents an era I’ve been interested in lately -- Reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine (which happens to be on my music trade), Dinosaur Jr., Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Pixies. I’ve been digging this low-fi, high pitched guitar sound as of recently.

Jane's Addiction - Just Because
You can’t go wrong with some Jane’s Addiction. I’ve been a big fan ever since I was too young to know I shouldn’t have been listening to them. This is the first song I’ve heard off of their newer album, and it’s every bit as good as their older stuff. I need to get this album, even though I think Dave Navarro is a complete douche-bag. I didn’t always hate him though. For those of you folks in the good ole’ US of A, his show on MTV which you’ve probably seen, or at least heard of, made me dislike him greatly.

Bauhaus - She's In Parties
This is the first band on the album who I haven’t heard in the past. It reminds me of the Jesus and Mary Chain and the other bands I mentioned in that review. Not good, not bad. Typical 80’s Brit Pop. If I was 10 years older (no offense!), I’d probably like this more.

Sisters of Mercy - Gimme Shelter
See previous review. I typically don’t dig this type of stuff unless it’s a classic and I feel I have to hear it or else I can’t call myself a music fan. Wait, I take that back… this just sucks. Sorry.

Killing Joke - Love Like Blood [12 Inch Version]
At this point in the album, my too-young-for-knowing-the-80’s body is about to fall asleep. This all sounds the same to me. Granted, I think if I grew up in the era, I would probably enjoy it much more. This song is much more upbeat than the previous though, so it’s got something going for it. It’s got some pretty good bass lines, but the vocals are typical of the era and style of music. Next please.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Love Missile F1-11
Okay, you’ve won me over with this one. I’ll probably sound like a newbie by saying this, but Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of my favorite movies, and until now I didn’t have a band name to put this track. It’s great. The soundtrack was unfortunately never released for the movie for whatever reason, but it has some great fucking songs on it – this one included. There’s also a great Smiths cover of Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want by the Dream Academy on the soundtrack too. Thanks for including this song, its great!

The Catherine Wheel - Show Me Mary
A great UK Shoegazer band, from what I’ve heard, and this is the first song I’ve actually heard from the band. Very catchy. I like it. It reminds me a lot of the recent Brit Pop movement here in Indie-Rock-America (See Elefant, Stelastarr, Franz Ferdinand, etc.). This is a good track. I’ll have to check out some more of their stuff.

Pop Will Eat Itself - Wise Up! Sucker [Inch Youth Mix]
I recognize this drum beat from somewhere – possibly from a newer song that used the sample. It’s okay enough, better than some of the previous but still lacking something to keep me interested. The vocals and lyrics are interesting, though. I can see a pre-teen, crimped hair blonde girl in her room repeating the lyrics “she loves me, she loves me not”, all while putting on her fishnet stockings preparing to go to the skating rink in the late 80’s.

Skinny Puppy - Dig It
If it weren’t a Sunday night, and I didn’t live in an apartment complex, I’d probably turn this song up really loud and enjoy it. It’s hard to believe this was created in the 80’s. I can see where much of Nine Inch Nails influences came from: Skinny Puppy. I used to be a huge NIN fan, and I have a lot of respect for Skinny Puppy. This song sounds too much like NIN’s “Terrible Lie” off of Pretty Hate Machine, which was recorded three years after this. Trent Reznor’s stock just went down a few points in my mind.

The Cure - Boys Don't Cry
A great song to end a pretty good collection of tracks. I like the Cure, but only recently due to my young age. I remember listening to the Cure as a child, but not really enjoying it because, well, I only enjoyed Vanilla Ice and the like at the time. I’ve come to respect the Cure and now realize what kind of influence they have on today’s music. I wish I would have realized sooner.

All-in-all, a good album. I probably would have appreciated it a lot more if I were a bit older (or younger, in regards to the Slipknot :)). I could probably suggest a lot of new bands you’d like who are replicating the sounds of some of the older artists on your album. B+

Yup. Terrible Lie by NIN was a blatant ripoff of Dig It. (though Trent Reznor prefers to call it "influenced by" Dig It)
