Name: Justin Halbersma
Birthday: June 1, 1977 (29)
Hometown: Kentville, Nova Scotia

Reporting from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia

Reporter: How are you today, Justin?
Justin: Surviving, day by day.
Reporter: Alright, let's get this interview started!

GM Questions

Reporter: What outcome do you expect for your team this year, and are we going to see a big trade from Atlanta?
Justin: I'd like to see us challenge for the playoffs, regardless of positioning. There are no points for finishing 9-15th. 1-8 is where we want to focus. As for trades, we'll test the market, but unless the right deal drops into my lap, I'm not rushing out to make trades for the sake of making trades. That's no way to earn the ear of your players.

Reporter: Which club(s) are your rivals?
Justin: Every club in the Eastern Conference. We're all competing for the same 1-8 spots in the conference. I don't think there's one or two teams you can say are bigger rivals than others in this conference. At the end of the day, we're all competing for the same thing. Which means every team will be looking to step on another to move higher.

Reporter: That was a big move getting rid of Kyle Chipchura, Sami Kapanen & Brent Seabrook; why did you get rid of them and how do you think the newcomers Adam Deadmarsh, Andrew Cassels & Richard Jackman will do on your team?
Justin: Kyle, Sami, and Brent were hard to part with. Sami and Brent were playing well, but Kyle wasn't fitting into the role we wanted him to fill. To make the trade work, Brent and Sami were necessary parts of the puzzle. I'll be blunt; Adam can do more than he has since arriving here. Andrew has filled the second line center role very well, and we're looking to see how Richie does when he makes the big club.

Reporter: How long have you been in this league. Where do you think your club will be in the next 2-5 years?
Justin: I'm a first year GM. I haven't been here for one full year yet. In 2-5 years, I plan on being a contender for the Stanley Cup.

Reporter: Who do you believe is or going to be your franchise player?
Justin: Cam Ward. No doubt about it. He's developing into a tremendous goaltender.

Reporter: Do you think you are a cup contender? If so why, and if not, what will take you become a Cup contender?
Justin: Not yet. We're a few players away from making a serious run at this moment. That could change if all the pieces come together.

Reporter: Do you think your team will make the playoffs? If yes how well do you think they will do, if not why?
Justin: I'm saying we'll be in tough to make the playoffs this season. If we get some pieces that we're missing this season, that prediction could change. Do we have the players to do it? Yes. Will we gel in time? That's the age-old question.

Reporter: Which team(s) do you think are the most underrated and overrated?
Justin: Watch out for Chicago. They are flying under the radar and I wouldn't want to face them on a regular basis. As for overrated? Nashville. They are beatable. No time to get together as a team.

Reporter: Who(s) has been the biggest surprise this year on your team?
Justin: Ward. He's been phenomenal behind a bad defense.

Other Questions

Reporter: Who was your favorite childhood team?
Justin: Pittsburgh.

Reporter: Who is your favorite goaltender?
Justin: Mikka Kiprusoff.

Reporter: Who is your favorite defenceman?
Justin: Wade Redden.

Reporter: Who is your favorite forward?
Justin: Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby.

Reporter: What is one thing other GMs don't know about you?
Justin: I don't take things for granted. What we have can all be taken away. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away… may the name of the Lord be praised.

Reporter: Thats for your time Justin and good luck in the rest of the season. Be sure to tune into next week's interview with Rick Jessup, GM of the Boston Bruins.
