Dedicated Babbling
*sigh*
Monday, March 25 12:37AM
Holy crow. What a week that was. In the end, we had a good time, traveled a long way, and Brent and I had an excellent time catching up on seven lost years since he left Bolton for the streets of Moncton. As I noted here a week ago Friday, he and I, along with Stephen Choi, left Toronto around 11AM on Monday for Montreal following a terrific WrestleMania at SkyDome. A trip that was scheduled to take no more than six hours ended up being eight-and-a-half thanks to a stunning white snow and ice storm outside of Kingston that lasted all the way through to Montreal. Inside Montreal it was so bad the street signs were not legible, causing us to get lost as we ventured too far out of town. Long story short, we eventually doubled back and made our way to the Travelodge on Rene-Levesque just in time to check in and throw our bags down, run back out on the street, hail a cab and make our way to the Molson Centre. We were in our seats with only four minutes to spare but still made the show. Afterwards, a migraine headache limited me to getting back to the hotel and passing out, much to the chagrin of our cabby who wished to take us to the "Grand Prix where you can do everything to the strippers." You can imagine I'm quite sad about this loss. ;)

The following morning we awoke in time to grab an overpriced breakfast of a croissant and juice to get back on the road and head Ottawa way. That drive, fortunately, was more reasonable taking under the 90 minutes we had allocated. We checked in to my favourite Travelodge at Queen and Bronson across from Parliament, grabbed a bit at the Southern Cross, and headed for a short walk along Sparks Street. Then it was back to prepare for our night, off to the 403 bus and on our way to the Corel Centre out in the boondocks of Kanata. We got there with plenty of time and caught another great show. Back at the hotel we arrived at 11:45PM to find our cot wasn't there which left three guys and two beds. A phone call down to the front desk was met with irritation as I was instructed I should have asked earlier. I indicated that not only had I asked weeks ago but it was written on the bill they made me sign to check in and it was their problem, not mine. Not so, said he, their housekeeping was closed and I would just have to tough it out. But no, said I, and basically all but politely ordered a new room. Sure enough, seeing the error of their ways, we were awarded the penthouse suite for the night, complete with kitchen and separate two-king-bedroom. Excellent!

Of course, no evil trip of doom would be complete without the four+ hour drive home in more sleet, snow, and ice - which kept up continuously until just outside of Belleville. Keep in mind it's not like I drive a nice sports utility - I drive a Grand Am GT with "performance" tires. This means they perform well on nice roads, but perform like a no-mouth dog in a frisbee contest on ice.

That's my story, as long and convoluted as it is. It's back to work now for me, and back to the gym after a week-long break to entertain my Eastern friend. But most of all, it's back to driving as little as humanly possible - 1700 km in a week is more than enough for me.

Cheers,
Rick Jessup
