What happens when you take elements of umpteen reality shows before you and merge them together? You get NBC’s ‘Treasure Hunters’, named so presumably because ‘The Amazing Race’ was already taken. NBC announced the new 10-episode series yesterday, indicating the show will be a “quest” series that follows teams around the world “using folklore, fantasy and actual history as clues to solve an intricate puzzle.” NBC Universal Cable Entertainment & Cross Network Strategy president Jeff Gaspin took issue with the inevitable ‘Race’ comparisons, noting “it’s inspired by the success of books like The Da Vinci Code.” Further comparisons were made to ABC’s failed ‘The Mole’, a smart reality show that has garnered a large cult following (and large sales for the recently released first season on DVD) but saw low ratings during their televised run. And it would seem an online element that will have viewers get involved with the show in one way or another will spark comparisons to yet another failed reality series, ABC’s ‘Push, Nevada’. ‘Treasure Hunters’ is expected to debut in August to close off the summer television season.
