Our American friends probably haven’t heard much about the big RCMP shooting last week in Alberta. To be quick four RCMP officers were shot to death in an ambush at a marijuana grow-op run by an apparently crazy man rather well known to police.
Of course, this has become the perfect time for many people to praise the idea of decriminalized or legal marijuana – the “victimless crime” – as this catastrophe wouldn’t have happened should marijuana be legal. Let’s ignore for a moment that fact that an informal survey I conducted amongst some leaf-partaking friends indicated they would have no interest in “low grade legal pot” to ask:
How exactly does pot being legal stop people from being insane? Is this the same school of thought that says if we take guns away from criminals they’ll lose all desire to kill? Do we truly feel that if pot were legal that criminals currently running grow-ops would “see the light” and magically become law-abiding citizens? Or perhaps – just perhaps – would they delve into other illegal activities that pay as much or more as pot, for instance, designer drugs?
Cheers!
