Just click on the logo to bring yourself to AltaVista. This is
probably the best search engine on the Internet, and there are a variety of
reasons for this. The following tips will show you why.
- Want to see who is linking to your page? It's simple with AltaVista!
Just click on the search window and type link: url of page you are
interested in and all sites linking to that site will appear!
- The authors of AltaVista suggest using their Simple Search.
- The more words the better. Synonyms are also advised.
- Don't worry about the number of results -- any page using the words you
search for will show up, but in the order of importance. Therefore, if you
don't find what you're looking for after two or three pages, it's best to
rephrase your search query.
- To make sure one word is in all your results, use the + sign. For example,
if you're searching for recipes with chicken, you can type recipe +chicken,
where chicken will be in all searches, and recipe will be optional. Similarly,
a - sign will ensure that a word does NOT appear in the search results.
- Always use lower case, unless you are positive of what you are searching
for. Searching AltaVista will only turn up pages using that exact
spelling, while searching altavista will turn up any number of variations
in case.
- To search for a specific phrase, use " " around the phrase. Just make
sure no words are in between the phrase in the quotations.
- To find all pages at a given site, type host:the site you are interested in
