Disney's Disposable DVD Test Fails
Posted by Rick Jessup, October 28 10:19 AM

What if a DVD destructed on it's own and nobody was around to care? That appears to be the case with Disney's failed market testing of DVDs that self destruct in 48 hours, and cost $7USD. The DVDs, called EZ-Ds, contain full DVD movies, but self destruct and are completely unusable 48 hours after they have been removed from their package.

Marketed as a replacement for movie fans who can't be bothered returning their DVDs to rental outlets, the fact that they cost more than twice as much as a video rental or PPV purchase seems to have been the major obstacle thus far. Go figure.

YO!

I think rentals of DVDs are around $5-6 at my Rogers. Only $1 more to not return it? That sounds like a good investment to me. The travel time (not including gas) is worth more than that.

Sure, the technology might SUCK, but for the concept at $7 I'm in! :)

I wonder how many of the DVDs have been found to be unusable less than 48 hours after purchase, due to either a packaging flaw or accelerated decay of the disc itself. Imagine buying a disc on Friday, putting it in your DVD player late Saturday night, and finding out that it's already unwatchable. Now that the video store's closed you can't get it back to them to prove it's defective until the 48 hours has passed, and by that time you can't prove that you haven't watched it.

Clive,

$7USD. So about $10-$12CDN, depending on our exchange rate. Or you could buy a new non-destructing DVD for $18-$25 at Future Shop.

Not to mention the landfill issues involved with the creation of yet another non-biodegradable form of waste.

Cheers,
-R.
